This bill would address the concerning practice of spreading contaminated sewage sludge on agricultural lands in New York. PFAS ends up in wastewater and sewage treatment facilities when PFAS containing waste from residential, commercial, and industrial uses are flushed into wastewater drains. Sewage treatment does not break down persistent chemicals like PFAS, and often, the remaining sewage sludge is recycled into fertilizer, then sold to farmers.
